La Porte Fire Department highlights accomplishments and community engagement at annual report meeting

The La Porte City Council meeting on January 27, 2025, focused on several key topics, including the annual report from the Fire Department and updates from various committees.

Fire Chief Chris Pettis presented the Fire Department's annual report, highlighting significant achievements in 2024. The department serves La Porte, Shore Acres, and Greenspointe, covering 21 square miles and a population of approximately 37,000. Chief Pettis reported that the department responded to nearly 2,400 calls last year, marking an increase of about 300 calls from the previous year. This uptick was partially attributed to Hurricane Barrel.

The report detailed the department's accomplishments, including the addition of two new fire rigs, the promotion of three engine operators to shift captains, and the onboarding of 12 new volunteers, the highest number in recent years. The department also implemented cancer screening initiatives and upgraded equipment, including a $1.3 million Motorola radio system expected to be operational by March or April 2025.

Council members expressed their pride in the Fire Department's dedication and service, acknowledging the hard work of both paid staff and volunteers. They emphasized the importance of community engagement and the department's role in public safety.

In addition to the fire department's report, the council received updates from the Fiscal Affairs Committee, which reviewed the first quarter investment report and purchasing card expenditures, both of which were in good order. The La Porte Development Corporation Board reported on initiatives to support small business development, including free courses offered by San Jacinto College for aspiring entrepreneurs.

The meeting concluded with council members commending city employees for their years of service and expressing gratitude for the city's strong financial position. The next meeting is scheduled for March 10, where further discussions and reports will take place.
