Carolyn Awiloa reports on Lahaina Community Land Trust's growth and funding needs

In a recent meeting of the Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee, significant discussions centered around the ongoing recovery efforts in Lahaina, particularly through the work of the Lahaina Community Land Trust. Testifier Carolyn Awiloa, a founding member and director of operations for the trust, expressed gratitude for the committee's support over the past year, highlighting the organization's growth and recent achievements.

Awiloa announced that the trust has accepted its seventh property through a planned giving donation, emphasizing the community's increasing hope for a sustainable future. She noted that the trust is actively working to assist homeowners in rebuilding amidst rising costs and economic challenges, including tariffs and shipping changes. The organization has begun to enroll participants in an insurance gap program, which aims to provide crucial financial assistance to families struggling to return home.

Despite these advancements, Awiloa stressed the urgent need for continued support, as the trust is quickly depleting its funding from the previous year. She mentioned the importance of partnerships with various organizations, including the Long-Term Recovery Group and Hawaii Community Lending, to enhance their efforts in helping Lahaina residents.

During the meeting, committee members raised questions about the trust's focus on affordable housing versus open space initiatives. Awiloa confirmed that while there are options for open space, the immediate priority remains addressing the community's housing needs. She also revealed that the trust has not yet received funding from the Hawaii Community Foundation, despite ongoing efforts to secure support.
