Maui Council seeks public input on fiscal year 2026 budget priorities

The Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee convened on April 19, 2025, to gather public input on budget priorities for the upcoming fiscal year 2026. The meeting aimed to engage community members in discussions about financial allocations and economic development initiatives.

Committee members emphasized the importance of public testimony, inviting residents to share their views on budget priorities. Each participant was allotted three minutes to present their thoughts, followed by a brief pause for questions from committee members. This format encouraged open dialogue and ensured that community voices were heard in the budgeting process.

The first testifier, Kavika Gonzales, a teacher at Konakuk High School and the 2020 Teacher of the Year for the region, spoke about the significance of the Maui Economic Development Board. With 24 years of experience in teaching science, technology, engineering, and math, Gonzales highlighted the need for continued investment in educational programs that support these critical fields.

The meeting underscored the committee's commitment to transparency and community involvement in financial decision-making. As the budget process continues, the committee will consider the feedback received from residents to shape the fiscal priorities for the coming year.
