Molokai Heritage Trust secures $1.7M boosting community programs and ancestral land purchase plans

The Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee meeting held on April 19, 2025, highlighted significant community initiatives aimed at enhancing local economic development and supporting vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly.

Kawai Puna Kalipi, representing the Molokai Heritage Trust, provided an update on their efforts to secure funding for community projects. He expressed gratitude for the county's initial investment, which has led to over $1.7 million in additional funding—an impressive 30-fold increase. Kalipi emphasized the Trust's ongoing goal to purchase Molokai Ranch and restore community stewardship over the land.

Ferris Kulei, representing the Kupuna program, shared the impact of their services on the elderly population in Molokai. Since its inception in 2022, the program has expanded to offer a variety of activities, including health services, exercise classes, and social engagement opportunities. Kulei noted the challenges faced by many kupuna, particularly those suffering from dementia, and highlighted the program's role in providing essential health services and fostering community connections. He reported that the program has created over 21 jobs and serves over a thousand seniors, showcasing its vital role in the community.

Alice Kahanui, executive director of the Molokai Arts Center, also spoke at the meeting, advocating for continued funding from the Office of Economic Development. She acknowledged the county's support for various local organizations and expressed appreciation for the funding allocated to enhance Hawaiian arts programming, which is crucial for cultural preservation and community engagement.
