Los Banos City Council proclaims National Poppy Day and celebrates community achievements

The City Council of Los Banos convened on April 16, 2025, to discuss several important community matters, including a proclamation for National Poppy Day and the approval of a new union contract.

The meeting began with an invocation led by Mark Barcellus, Chaplain of the Elk Lodge, who emphasized the council's role in guiding the community toward growth and prosperity. Following the invocation, the council approved the meeting agenda unanimously.

A significant highlight of the meeting was the proclamation of May 27, 2025, as National Poppy Day. This initiative, supported by the American Legion, aims to honor the sacrifices of soldiers who have died in service to the country. The council encouraged all citizens to wear a memorial poppy on this day as a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

Additionally, the council recognized the Seventh and J Street parking lot improvement project, which received a Blueprint Award from the San Joaquin Valley regional planning agencies and the Merced County Association of Governments. This award acknowledges the project's contribution to community collaboration and economic viability.

During the public forum, Kelsey DeGehr, a newly elected union president, announced the ratification of a four-year contract for the public works miscellaneous employees unit. She expressed gratitude for the partnership and support from the city officials, highlighting a renewed spirit among union members to enhance city operations.

Jennifer Foster, executive director of IDD services for Kingsview, also addressed the council, sharing appreciation for the Elks Lodge's contributions to their program. The upgrades to their kitchen facilities, funded by a grant, will significantly benefit individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the community.

The meeting concluded with a sense of community spirit and collaboration, as various stakeholders expressed their commitment to supporting the needs of Los Banos residents. The council's actions reflect ongoing efforts to foster a vibrant and inclusive community for all citizens.
