Subscribe for Free Aloha House was noted for being the only licensed detox and residential treatment program on Maui for low-income individuals, offering outpatient services and clean and sober housing to aid long-term recovery. Hokowana also detailed the programs at Maui Youth and Family Services, including a safe house for girls aged 12 to 17 who are victims of crime, and a newly opened home for young adults aged 18 to 26 who have aged out of foster care. She emphasized the ongoing need for housing solutions in the community.
Additionally, the Malama Family Recovery Center was recognized for its unique approach to treatment for women, allowing them to reunify with their children while participating in the program. This center is one of only two in the state that provides gender-specific care, supporting women in their parenting roles.
The discussions underscored the importance of continued funding and support for these agencies as they work to address the pressing needs of the community, particularly in the wake of the wildfires. The committee's acknowledgment of these services reflects a commitment to enhancing the well-being of Maui's residents and fostering recovery and resilience in the face of adversity.
As the meeting concluded, the committee emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration with these agencies to ensure that the community's mental health and housing needs are met effectively. Further discussions and follow-up actions are anticipated in future meetings to address these critical issues.
