Boys and Girls Clubs of Maui highlights youth programs at council meeting

The session began with a presentation from a representative of the Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB), who emphasized the importance of investing in local youth through STEM programs. The representative requested the committee's support for MEDB STEM Works, sharing personal experiences of how these programs have transformed lives.

Following this, Committee Member Fulton engaged with the speaker, inquiring about the county's efforts to attract engineers, including a bonus incentive for new hires. The discussion underscored the county's commitment to enhancing its workforce through targeted investments in education and professional development.

Next, TJ Daya, Director of Operations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Maui, addressed the committee. Daya expressed gratitude for the county's support in providing programs that empower youth, particularly those in need. He detailed the club's extensive offerings, which include leadership training, healthy lifestyle education, and access to the arts and sports. Daya noted that the clubs serve over 1,200 children across six locations, with significant participation from the Makawao and Haiku areas.

The meeting concluded with a focus on the importance of community support for youth programs, highlighting the collaborative efforts needed to ensure the success and well-being of Maui's younger generations. The committee plans to further evaluate funding allocations to support these vital initiatives in the upcoming budget cycle.
