Maui Council considers tax increases for non-resident property owners and STEM program funding

Maui County's Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee meeting on April 14 highlighted pressing issues surrounding property taxes and educational funding.

A key discussion point emerged regarding the taxation of non-owner-occupied properties valued over $2 million. Testifiers expressed concern that many wealthy property owners do not pay Hawaii income taxes because they reside in other states. This situation creates an unfair burden on local residents who contribute through both property and income taxes. Advocates are urging the committee to consider increasing property taxes for these high-value, non-resident properties, with suggestions for even higher rates on properties valued at $10 million or more.

In addition to tax discussions, the meeting also featured support for the Maui Economic Development Board's (MEDB) STEM Works program. Testifier Sheena Belavance passionately advocated for continued funding, emphasizing the program's role in providing essential STEM education to students. She highlighted various activities, including robotics and competitive gaming, which prepare students for future careers in technology and engineering. Belavance underscored the importance of investing in local youth, stating, "These are the kids that will lead us into the next century."
