Transportation efficiency took center stage at the North East Independent School District (NEISD) Board Meeting on April 14, 2025, as officials unveiled significant adjustments for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. Executive Director of Transportation Bill Harrison presented a plan aimed at streamlining bus routes and improving on-time arrival rates for students.
Key recommendations include adjusting school bell times across all grade levels by five minutes. This change is designed to enhance the efficiency of bus routes, allowing for additional stops and the elimination of at least three morning routes and two afternoon routes. The proposed new schedule would see elementary schools starting at 7:25 AM, middle schools at 8:30 AM, and high schools at 8:55 AM.
Harrison emphasized that these adjustments would not only save time but also reduce the number of bus stops within gated communities, which currently account for significant delays. By minimizing stops inside these areas, the district aims to cut down on the time buses spend navigating through them, thereby improving overall transportation efficiency.
The plan is projected to save the district approximately $84,000 while enhancing service reliability. Harrison noted that the adjustments would allow buses to handle three tiers of transportation instead of two, maximizing the use of available resources.
In addition to the bell time changes, the district is also exploring the purchase of smaller minibuses to address driver shortages, which could further improve service delivery.
As the board prepares to implement these changes, communication with parents will be crucial. The district plans to utilize its SmartTag system to keep families informed about the new schedules and any adjustments to bus routes.
Overall, these transportation updates reflect NEISD's commitment to enhancing student safety and efficiency in school transportation, setting the stage for a smoother school year ahead.
