Dana Point council approves monument honoring Fifth Marine Regiment at Heritage Park

In the heart of Dana Point, city council members gathered on April 15, 2025, to discuss a significant project that aims to honor the brave men and women of the United States Marine Corps. The proposed "Returning Home" monument, a bronze sculpture by renowned artist Sutton Betty, is set to be a centerpiece at Heritage Park, symbolizing the reunion of service members with their families after deployment.

Terry Rifkin, president of the Dana Point Fifth Marine Regiment Support Group, passionately presented the vision for the monument, which has been in the making for nearly four years. "This tribute will not only honor our military but also the families who support them," Rifkin stated, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by both service members and their loved ones.

The council unanimously supported the project, which is expected to cost around $220,000, with half of the funding to come from the city and the other half raised by the support group. The monument will be accompanied by park improvements, including inscribed pavers and bronze plaques, allowing community members to honor veterans and loved ones.

While the project received overwhelming support, some residents raised concerns about the addition of three new trees in the park, fearing they would obstruct views. Council members acknowledged these concerns and agreed to exclude the trees from the final plan, ensuring that the monument would enhance the park's beauty without compromising residents' enjoyment.

As the meeting progressed, the council also reviewed updates to city policies, aiming to modernize and clarify existing regulations. These changes, which have been vetted by the city attorney, are intended to streamline operations and ensure compliance with state laws.
