Emma Willard School plans new faculty housing with demolition of Tangeman Hall

The Troy Planning Board meeting on April 16, 2025, spotlighted a significant development project for the Emma Willard School, as representatives from Consigli Construction and SWBR presented plans for new faculty housing. The project involves the demolition of Tangeman Hall and the construction of four new buildings, totaling 12 housing units, aimed at enhancing faculty accommodations on campus.

Kevin Johnson from Consigli Construction outlined the project's timeline, expressing hopes to break ground in June 2025, with the goal of having the new units ready for occupancy by June 2026. The proposed buildings will be strategically located in the northeast section of the campus, set back 38 to 40 feet from the private drive to ensure adequate space and access.

Brian Dion from SWBR detailed the design, which includes 25 parking spaces—two per unit, with two designated as ADA accessible. Each unit will also feature a dedicated storage area and a designated space for waste and recycling. A playground is planned for the east side of the housing area, intended for use by all residents.

The project also addresses safety concerns, with plans to replace an existing gate on Pinewood Avenue to improve access for emergency services. The gate will be equipped with a sensor to automatically open during emergencies, ensuring swift entry for fire and police departments.

Civil engineer Ben Wolfling highlighted the project's compliance with stormwater management regulations and utility upgrades, including an increase in water line size to support fire hydrants. The development aims to integrate seamlessly with the existing campus infrastructure while promoting sustainability through features like bicycle parking and connections to pedestrian pathways.

As the project moves forward, the Planning Board expressed appreciation for the thorough presentation and collaboration, indicating a positive outlook for the upcoming construction phase. The anticipated faculty housing is expected to significantly enhance the living conditions for staff at Emma Willard School, marking a progressive step for the institution.
