Bend-La Pine Schools revamp middle and high school science curriculum with Lab Aids and Pure Physics

The BLS School Board in Oregon has made significant strides in enhancing science education for middle and high school students, as discussed during their regular meeting on April 8, 2025. The board unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at improving the science curriculum, ensuring that all students receive a robust and equitable education in science.

The initiative began three years ago with a collaborative effort involving 22 teachers from various schools, who assessed the existing science standards and identified gaps in the curriculum. The team focused on aligning their programs with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which emphasize hands-on learning and critical thinking over rote memorization. This shift aims to prepare students for real-world applications of science, fostering skills that are essential for success in college and future careers.

A key component of the new curriculum is the adoption of the Lab Aids program for middle school students. This program encourages active participation through investigations and collaborative problem-solving, moving students away from passive learning methods. Teachers reported positive feedback from field tests, noting that the program not only engages students but also provides them with the necessary materials and resources to facilitate effective learning.

At the high school level, the board is implementing a new physics curriculum called Peer Physics, which is designed to be accessible for students concurrently taking algebra. This curriculum aims to ensure that all students have a solid foundation in the four core areas of science—biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science—by the time they graduate. The board is also phasing out less rigorous courses, such as physical science, to enhance the overall academic rigor of the science program.

The board's commitment to improving science education reflects a broader goal of preparing students for the challenges of the future. By integrating hands-on learning and ensuring a cohesive curriculum across grade levels, the BLS School Board is taking significant steps to enhance educational outcomes for all students in the district.
