Washington County secures federal funds for Gunlock Road safety improvements

Washington County officials have taken significant steps to enhance road safety and support local events during their recent commissioner meeting on April 15, 2025.

The commissioners approved a federal aid agreement for improvements to Gunlock Road, a project aimed at reducing accidents, particularly those involving motorcycles. The initiative, which has been budgeted at $2.1 million, includes the installation of guardrails, widening of certain areas, and additional signage to improve safety. Washington County will contribute approximately $145,000 to the project, which is expected to make a substantial difference in preventing accidents in this high-risk area.

In addition to road safety, the commissioners also approved an $8,000 sponsorship agreement for the Utah Summer Games. This sponsorship is particularly relevant as the event has expanded its activities into Washington County, drawing numerous teams and visitors, especially for baseball events. The influx of participants is anticipated to provide a significant economic boost to local hotels and businesses, particularly in the Hurricane East Side area.
