CHT announces 40 new affordable homes including units for homeless families

During a recent House Appropriations meeting in Vermont, significant discussions centered around a new housing project aimed at addressing the pressing need for affordable homes in the community. The project, spearheaded by the Champlain Housing Trust (CHT), will see the construction of 40 new homes, with a focus on affordability for low-income residents.

Of the 40 homes, 30 will be designated for families earning 30% of the Area Median Income (AMI), making them deeply affordable. Additionally, 10 homes will cater to households exiting homelessness, ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to stable housing. The project also includes 10 homes with project-based vouchers, which will provide tenants with automatic rental assistance, further easing their financial burden.

The meeting highlighted the importance of supportive services that CHT will provide to tenants, ensuring they have the necessary resources to thrive in their new homes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat homelessness and provide affordable housing options in the region.

In addition to the 40 new homes, the project is part of a larger development plan that includes a total of around 1,200 homes, with approximately 60 already built. This long-term project aims to create a sustainable community over the next decade, addressing the ongoing housing crisis in Vermont.
