The Lewis Central Community School District Board convened on April 7, 2025, to discuss significant adjustments to the school calendar for the upcoming academic year. The meeting highlighted changes prompted by a reduction in the teachers' contract days from 192 to 190, necessitating a reevaluation of the school schedule.
One of the primary changes discussed was the restructuring of the first day of school. Traditionally, the first day included a staggered start for new students—kindergartners, second graders, sixth graders, and ninth graders—who would be joined by the rest of the high school students later in the day. This year, the board decided to simplify the process by allowing all new students to acclimate to their new environment on the first day, with all students attending on the second day.

Previously, the high school and elementary schools operated on different schedules, which created confusion. The new plan will standardize the schedule, with regular dismissal on Mondays and no school on Thursdays for conferences, allowing for a more cohesive experience for families.
Another notable adjustment was the change of a previously scheduled professional development day on January 2 to a vacation day, ensuring that staff would return to work on January 5. This decision was made in accordance with the master contract, which prohibits certified staff from working on that date. The board emphasized the importance of providing a transition day for staff after the winter break.
The meeting also touched on the school calendar's alignment with holidays, including the decision to hold classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This decision was made to ensure that the school year concludes before Memorial Day, a goal that has not been achieved in many years.
The board's discussions reflect a commitment to improving the educational experience for students and families within the Lewis Central district. As the school year approaches, these changes aim to foster a smoother transition for students and enhance communication between schools and families. The board will continue to seek public input on the calendar adjustments as they finalize plans for the upcoming year.
