Cabell County Schools celebrates student achievements and announces key administrative updates

The Cabell Schools Board Meeting held on April 15, 2025, addressed several key topics, including personnel changes, student achievements, and upcoming events within the district.

The meeting commenced with a procedural update, where it was noted that item 6.03 regarding administrative leave for professional personnel was removed from the agenda. This decision was confirmed without any questions from board members.

Superintendent Mr. Hardesty then provided communications highlighting the ongoing competition season for students involved in various activities, with many advancing to state and national levels. He expressed pride in the students' accomplishments and wished them success. Additionally, he acknowledged recent military signings at Cabell Midland and Huntington High School, commending students for their commitment to service.

Mr. Hardesty also reported on child abuse awareness initiatives, where schools displayed blue pinwheels to raise awareness about protecting children from violence. He congratulated Miss Smalley, the high school band director, for her recognition at the recent all-area band concert, which featured talented musicians from local schools.

A notable achievement mentioned was the Huntington High School Chamber Choir's performance at Carnegie Hall, a prestigious venue that has hosted many renowned artists. The choir's invitation to perform was celebrated as a significant honor.

Looking ahead, Mr. Hardesty announced the unveiling of a mural honoring Woody Williams at the Huntington Mall and the anticipated opening of the Woody Williams Center for Advanced Learning and Careers in the upcoming school year. He also reminded attendees of the Teacher and Service Personnel of the Year awards scheduled for April 20 at Cabell Midland High School.

In terms of academic updates, Mr. Hardesty noted that state testing for third through eighth graders would begin on April 21, and he highlighted the early release for students on the upcoming Faculty Senate day. He also shared that midterm grades would be released on April 25.

A significant update was provided regarding the waiver for makeup days due to winter weather disruptions. The board was informed that a waiver had been granted for four days, adjusting the last day of school for students to May 28, while teachers would complete their contracts by June 200. This change will be brought to the board for approval at the May 6 meeting.
