CPRA selects Wheat's Marine for Chandelier Island restoration project

The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) Board meeting on April 21, 2025, marked a significant milestone for Louisiana's coastal restoration efforts with the announcement of the Chandelier Island restoration project entering its reconstruction phase. This ambitious initiative, set to be the largest barrier island restoration in the state's history, will involve rebuilding over 13 miles of coastline and is expected to enhance local ecosystems and protect communities from storm surges.

Wheat's Marine has been selected as the contractor for this project, tasked with providing essential pre-construction services, including cost estimation and constructability assessments. In addition to the Chandelier Island project, the meeting highlighted the ongoing Fritchie Marsh mitigation project, which aims to restore critical habitats impacted by the New Orleans to Venice levee system. Funded in part by the Corps of Engineers, this project is expected to be completed later this year and will play a vital role in enhancing local wildlife habitats.

The meeting concluded with discussions on the Drive Initiative, aimed at reorganizing the Department of Energy and Natural Resources to improve efficiency and coordination among agencies. This initiative includes the establishment of a Natural Resources Commission to enhance inter-agency collaboration and public engagement.
