Sea Well proposes Malibu Community Water Project using buoy-based desalination technology

A groundbreaking water solution was unveiled at the Malibu City Council meeting on April 14, 2025, as a representative from Sea Well presented an innovative desalination technology aimed at addressing the region's ongoing water challenges. The proposed Malibu Community Water Project seeks to harness desalinated water from offshore buoys, offering a fresh approach to water supply in a state grappling with drought.

The technology involves deploying buoys approximately one mile from shore, which would draw seawater and transport it to land via pipelines. This method not only promises to save around 15% of the energy typically required for desalination but also aims to provide a reliable water source for Malibu's 23,000 residents. The project could deliver approximately 83 gallons of water per person daily, significantly enhancing local water security.

With Los Angeles County currently supplying water primarily from the state water project—now facing a reliability rate of just 45% due to drought—this offshore solution presents a compelling alternative. The proposed desalination method is expected to be more cost-effective than traditional onshore desalination and recycled water, boasting a reliability rate of 95%.

As Malibu continues to confront the dual threats of drought and fire, the Sea Well initiative could play a crucial role in shaping the city's water future. The council's consideration of this project marks a significant step towards innovative solutions for sustainable water management in coastal California.
