Family Justice Center in Nampa faces funding challenges while serving abuse victims

During the recent City Council Workshop held on April 16, 2025, in Nampa, Idaho, the Family Justice Center presented its annual update, highlighting both significant achievements and pressing challenges faced by the organization. The center, which provides crucial support to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse, reported a 46.4% increase in client visits since 2020, underscoring the growing need for its services in the community.

The center's mission focuses on promoting safety, self-sufficiency, hope, and healing for those affected by abuse. However, the organization is grappling with funding challenges, particularly as federal grant opportunities have diminished. The center's representative noted that they have not been able to apply for new grants this year, which has led to the difficult decision to eliminate one staff position due to funding constraints. Despite these challenges, the center emphasized that it is not seeking additional financial support from the city, instead relying on community donations and existing grants.

The Family Justice Center serves a broad clientele, with approximately 70% of its clients coming from Nampa and 19% from surrounding areas in Canyon County. The center collaborates with multiple agencies to streamline support for victims, allowing them to receive comprehensive assistance in one location. This model not only enhances the experience for clients but also reduces the burden on law enforcement and other community resources.

In addition to addressing immediate needs, the center has made strides in expanding its facilities and services. A new counseling center has been established, thanks to community donations, which has alleviated overcrowding and improved service delivery. The center also reported successful fundraising efforts, bringing in over $500,000 in grants and additional awards last year.

The council members expressed their support for the Family Justice Center, with some offering to advocate for additional funding from Canyon County. The discussions highlighted the center's vital role in the community and the importance of continued collaboration to ensure that victims of abuse receive the necessary support and resources.
