The dispute centered on restroom and locker-room access, staff practices for names and pronouns, and legal jurisdiction. Shannon Adcock, founder and president of Awake Illinois, told the board her group had filed a federal Title IX complaint and warned of financial consequences if the district did not change course: “Failure to address the Title IX violations will invite severe repercussions, including the termination of federal funding, which would mean $20,000,000 in this district’s case,” she said. Adcock said the complaint alleges the district “failure to designate and enforce restroom facilities strictly by biological sex” and attached parent testimony as evidence.

Across the room, students, parents and alumni described the district as a place that protects vulnerable learners. James Estrada, the district’s student ambassador, urged clarity from the board and said the most common request he has heard from students and staff is “clarity based on facts.” Cameron, who identified himself as a transgender man and said he transitioned as a high-school student, described rising hostility toward transgender people and told the board the environment for trans youth “is definitively worse and downright dangerous.”
