Wellington installs reused sports lighting at Tiger Shark Cove for public use

During a recent Village Council Workshop in Wellington, officials discussed the installation of two Musco sports lighting poles at Tiger Shark Cove, a move aimed at enhancing recreational opportunities in the community. The project, which will utilize existing poles and fixtures from the recently decommissioned South Shore Park, is set to cost approximately $104,500.

The new lighting will illuminate about three-quarters of an acre, including a playing field and a basketball court, allowing residents to enjoy these facilities after dark. Currently, the area is only accessible during daylight hours, limiting its use. The lights will operate on a timer, mirroring the schedule of Village Park, and will be available until 9:00 PM on weekdays.

Council members emphasized the importance of promoting this open play area, which is designed for community use without the need for league participation. The initiative aims to address the demand for accessible recreational spaces, particularly for those seeking informal play opportunities.

While the project is expected to enhance the usability of the space, officials noted that the poles being repurposed are the only ones from South Shore Park that meet structural certification standards for reuse. The council is optimistic about the positive reception from residents, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of the project through the reuse of existing materials.

As the project moves forward, the council plans to communicate the details to the community, ensuring that residents are aware of the new opportunities for evening recreation at Tiger Shark Cove.
