Aurora City Council approves sales tax agreement for Valley Honda dealership expansion

The Aurora City Council made significant strides in economic development during its recent Committee of the Whole meeting, particularly with a resolution to authorize a sales tax revenue sharing agreement with Valley Honda. This agreement aims to modernize and expand the dealership, which has been a staple in the community for 50 years.

Valley Honda's proposed expansion includes adding a third lane to its service drive, increasing showroom space, and preparing for the sale and service of electric vehicles. The project is estimated to cost around $17.6 million and is expected to enhance operational efficiency, addressing current congestion issues that often spill onto the street during peak hours.

The sales tax sharing agreement is structured to benefit both the city and Valley Honda. The city will retain the first $1,050,000 of sales tax generated, with any additional revenue split 65% to Valley Honda and 35% to the city. This arrangement is designed to ensure that the city continues to receive a stable revenue stream while supporting the dealership's growth.

Rick Williams, attorney for Valley Honda, emphasized the dealership's commitment to the community and its employee-owned structure, which includes 220 employees, many of whom are Aurora residents. He noted that the dealership's access to capital is more limited compared to private entities, making city support crucial for their expansion plans.

The council's discussions also touched on the competitive landscape with neighboring cities, particularly Naperville, which does not offer similar incentives. This context highlights Aurora's proactive approach to retaining and attracting businesses in a competitive market.

As the city moves forward with this agreement, it anticipates not only bolstering local employment but also enhancing the overall economic vitality of the area.
