The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) in Connecticut is taking significant steps to enhance communication and outreach for families with individuals with disabilities. During the recent WEST REGION RAC meeting on April 17, 2025, members discussed leveraging social media platforms, particularly Facebook, to disseminate important information more effectively. Adriana Ramirez from the Connecticut Family Support Network highlighted the potential of parent Facebook groups to reach a wider audience, suggesting collaboration to share updates and resources.

In addition to social media strategies, the meeting addressed the ongoing need for residential placements for individuals with disabilities. DDS is currently facilitating a Request for Proposals (RFP) for ten Community Living Arrangement (CLA) group homes, with a deadline for proposals set for June 13. This initiative aims to address the pressing demand for residential options, as the region is facing a significant shortage of available placements, with 30 emergency cases currently on the waiting list.

The meeting also touched on the upcoming ID Partnership Day on May 23, which will feature vendors, food, and music, aimed at fostering community engagement. Furthermore, the One Voice Conference on April 24 was highlighted as a valuable networking opportunity for families and service providers.

Despite these proactive measures, challenges remain, particularly concerning staffing shortages in public programs. The DDS is grappling with difficulties in filling positions, which has led to a partial hiring freeze and constraints on resources. The meeting underscored the urgency of addressing these staffing issues to ensure that individuals with disabilities receive the support they need.

As the DDS continues to navigate these challenges, the emphasis on community collaboration and innovative outreach strategies will be crucial in improving services and support for families across Connecticut.
