Glens Falls City Council approves Maple Street closure for Farmers Market and Arts Festival

The City of Glens Falls Board of Public Safety convened on April 9, 2025, to discuss several community-focused initiatives, including the approval of street closures for upcoming events that aim to enhance local engagement and support local businesses.

One of the key resolutions passed was the closure of Maple Street on Saturdays from 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM, starting May 3 through June 1, to facilitate the Glens Falls Farmers Market. This market will temporarily relocate to the TD Bank parking lot while the new South Street Market Center is under construction. The decision reflects the city's commitment to supporting local vendors and providing residents with access to fresh produce and goods.

In addition, the board approved the 2025 LARAC Arts Festival, scheduled for June 13-15 in City Park. This event will also necessitate road closures on Maple Street and aims to attract visitors to the area, thereby boosting local commerce. The city has collaborated with LARAC to enhance the festival's offerings, including the provision of additional portable restrooms to accommodate attendees.

The board also discussed the annual Glens Falls Collaborative's "Boo to You" event, set for October 25, 2025. This family-friendly event will utilize city streets and park space, further fostering community spirit and engagement.

In a broader context, the city has sought funding from the Warren County Occupancy Tax Board to support events that can draw visitors and generate economic activity. Glens Falls received a significant award of $100,000, the second-largest in the county, aimed at enhancing local events and encouraging longer stays by visitors.

Lastly, the meeting touched on safety concerns regarding sidewalk use, particularly regarding bicycles and electric vehicles. The board is considering measures to improve pedestrian safety, reflecting ongoing community discussions about urban mobility and safety.
