Jamie Coffee Kelly reports on successful veteran stand down and outreach efforts

During the Valley County Board of County Commissioner meeting on April 21, 2025, the spotlight was on the veteran service officer, Jamie Coffee Kelly, who provided an update on recent initiatives and outreach efforts for local veterans. The meeting highlighted the success of the recent veteran stand down event, which took place in February. This year, the event was adapted to a drive-through format due to cold weather, allowing 35 veterans to receive essential supplies, including 10 pounds of hamburger, chicken, and potatoes, along with cold weather gear and flashlights. The collaboration with local businesses and organizations, particularly Ridley's grocery store, was crucial in making this event a success.

Looking ahead, Kelly announced plans for another stand down event around Veterans Day, aiming for a warmer date to facilitate better attendance. The outreach efforts have also included 37 new visits and 55 follow-ups regarding claims, showcasing the ongoing need for support among veterans in the community. Kelly emphasized the importance of engaging younger veterans through activities like a new four-wheeler club and game nights, which aim to foster community and provide valuable information about available services.

In addition to these initiatives, Kelly reported a significant increase in monthly compensation and disability payments for veterans, totaling over $12,500, with back payments amounting to nearly $34,000. This uptick in claims processing speed was noted as a positive development, despite some ongoing delays with older claims.

The meeting also touched on the need for increased participation in regional veteran meetings, as attendance has dwindled. Kelly expressed concern that without more engagement, some local veteran organizations might face dissolution. She encouraged community members to reach out to veterans who may benefit from these services.
