Montgomery County Council allocates funding for health and dental services expansion

Montgomery County's Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee convened on April 15, 2025, to discuss critical funding and service initiatives aimed at enhancing community health resources. Among the key topics was a proposal to expand reproductive health services, which would include counseling, contraceptive options, and follow-up care for children at Kaiser and School-Based Health Centers. The committee supported a recommendation to split funding into two phases, allowing for a gradual rollout of these essential services.

Another significant discussion centered on behavioral health support for families. The Montgomery Cares Advisory Board proposed a $6,750 allocation to cover co-pays for behavioral health visits for Care for Kids clients. Failure to secure this funding could lead to reduced clinical services and the potential closure of the recently opened Germantown clinic, which serves a high-need area.

In addition, the committee discussed a $300,000 initiative to partner with community dental practices to provide dental services to 300 East County residents lacking access to care. This program aims to deliver essential dental treatments, focusing on disease prevention and management.

Lastly, the transition of dental staff from contractual to merit positions was highlighted, with a recommendation for $154,227 to support five full-time equivalent positions. This change is intended to create equity among staff performing similar roles and improve service delivery.
