The school has achieved national recognition by winning 9 out of the last 11 years in a competition where student artwork is displayed in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington, D.C. Stephanie Hernandez, a junior at Porter High School, was announced as the latest winner, with her artwork featuring a local cowboy. The board approved a request for funding to cover travel expenses for the students and chaperones to attend the event, which will further showcase the school's artistic achievements.
Additionally, New Caney High School's History Fair program was also discussed. Mr. Powell presented the request for an out-of-state trip to the National History Fair, where students will present their project titled "Major League Baseball: Knocking Tobacco Out of the Park." This marks the sixth consecutive year that New Caney High School has qualified for the national competition. The trip is scheduled for June 7 to June 13, 2025, and includes four students and two adult sponsors. The board approved this trip as well, following a motion and second from board members.
Overall, the meeting underscored the district's commitment to supporting student achievements and providing opportunities for educational experiences beyond the classroom. The board's approval of these trips reflects a dedication to fostering student growth in various fields, including education, arts, and history.
