Local Officials Discuss Fire Safety Home Hardening Measures with CAL FIRE

During the recent Colfax City Council meeting, officials discussed the upcoming home hardening program aimed at enhancing fire safety for residents. The initiative, which is expected to roll out in approximately 12 to 18 months, will focus on making homes more resilient against wildfires, a pressing concern for the community.

City representatives confirmed that funding for the program is secure and already allocated, alleviating concerns about potential delays. However, they advised against marketing the program prematurely to avoid raising public expectations about its start date.

Key components of the home hardening efforts will include improvements such as fire-resistant roofs and siding, as well as measures to create defensible space around properties. Notably, the program will also involve inspections by CAL FIRE to ensure compliance with fire safety standards.

One challenge highlighted during the meeting was the requirement for noncombustible decking materials, which currently do not exist on the market. City officials expressed hope that solutions would emerge by the time the program launches.
