Cerritos plans to install eight pickleball courts to enhance community safety and engagement

The Special City Council Meeting held on April 21, 2025, in Cerritos focused on community engagement and public safety, with a significant emphasis on the proposed installation of pickleball courts in local parks. Community member Norma highlighted the social benefits of pickleball, describing it as a natural community builder that fosters friendships and encourages neighborly interactions. She noted that the sport's accessibility and quick game duration make it an ideal activity for residents, potentially increasing park attendance and enhancing community ties.

Norma also linked the establishment of pickleball courts to public safety, suggesting that increased social interaction among neighbors could lead to a stronger community watch, thereby reducing residential burglaries. She emphasized the importance of knowing one’s neighbors, especially in times of emergencies, and encouraged participation in a free community emergency response team training scheduled for June at Norwalk City Hall. This training aims to prepare residents for natural disasters, highlighting the need for neighbors to support one another when professional help may be delayed.

In addition to the pickleball initiative, Norma proposed that local parks store emergency supplies and suggested that homes equipped with solar battery systems could serve as charging hubs during power outages. She also called for the expansion of the city’s emergency preparedness office to enhance its capacity.

The meeting concluded with a request for an update from the city manager regarding the eight pickleball courts approved in the previous council meeting on April 10.
