Legislators approve $100K transfer to Visit Baton Rouge for sports event marketing

In a recent meeting of the Louisiana Legislature's Appropriations Committee, a significant shift in funding for sports marketing was discussed, aiming to enhance economic opportunities in East Baton Rouge Parish. The proposal seeks to redirect approximately $100,000 annually from the now-defunct Baton Rouge Sports Foundation to Visit Baton Rouge, a well-established destination marketing organization.

The Sports Foundation, which previously managed these funds, has ceased operations since the COVID-19 pandemic. Representative Rhett Friberg introduced the bill to facilitate this transition, emphasizing the need for a reliable entity to continue promoting amateur sporting events in the area. Jill Kidder, President and CEO of Visit Baton Rouge, highlighted the organization's commitment to using these funds effectively to attract events that can significantly boost local tourism and the economy.

Kidder noted that Visit Baton Rouge has successfully brought in numerous events, including the United States Bowling Congress, which is expected to draw around 58,000 bowlers to the city over a few months. This influx is projected to generate an economic impact of approximately $110 to $120 million for the state, with a net benefit of around $4.5 to $5 million.

The committee members expressed strong support for the bill, recognizing the potential benefits of reallocating these funds. They appreciated Visit Baton Rouge's track record of responsible financial management and its focus on promoting athletic activities without using the funds for salaries or administrative costs.

As the bill moves forward, it represents a strategic effort to revitalize sports tourism in East Baton Rouge Parish, ensuring that the community continues to reap the economic rewards of hosting major sporting events.
