Howard County plans night shelter to address homelessness crisis

Howard County officials are taking significant steps to address homelessness in the community by proposing the addition of a night-by-night shelter. This initiative aims to enhance the existing resources available for individuals experiencing homelessness, particularly as the demand for shelter services continues to rise.

During a recent budget work session, Kelly, a representative from the county's homelessness response team, highlighted the importance of the Leola Dorsey Day Resource Center. This center provides essential services such as medical assistance, substance abuse support, and laundry facilities for formerly homeless and recently housed individuals. However, the current capacity to accommodate those in need is insufficient.

Rose Burton, Deputy Director, presented data indicating that the county's homeless response system currently has a capacity of only 132 individuals, while the grassroots shelter, which is undergoing renovations, will only provide 88 beds. This stark contrast underscores the urgent need for additional shelter options, especially during cold weather months when the county implements a cold weather shelter program and a code blue initiative. These programs have proven to be costly, often requiring hotel accommodations for those without shelter.

The discussions at the meeting revealed that the county's layered approach to homelessness services, including year-round hoteling for vulnerable populations, is becoming increasingly expensive and inadequate. The proposed night-by-night shelter is seen as a crucial step toward improving capacity and providing comprehensive support to those in need.
