The D128 School Board made significant strides in enhancing educational resources during their April 2025 meeting, particularly with the adoption of new textbooks and digital resources aimed at improving student performance in key subjects. The board approved approximately $52,000 for new materials, including an innovative approach to Algebra 1 that combines online resources with traditional print materials. This decision follows a year-long investigation by the math departments at Vernon Hills and Libertyville High Schools, which concluded that Amplify Desmos would best support student learning.
In addition to the textbook adoption, the board discussed the renewal of a driver education waiver that allows Libertyville High School to utilize simulators for behind-the-wheel instruction. This waiver, which is required every five years, enables the school to offer up to two hours of simulator training, complementing the six hours of on-road instruction mandated by state law. The board noted that Vernon Hills does not have simulators, as their program is structured differently, focusing solely on on-road training. Despite this difference, both schools are reported to be satisfied with their respective programs, indicating that effective driver education can be achieved with or without simulators.
