Milton Equestrian Committee outlines 2025 initiatives for land preservation and community safety

The City of Milton's Equestrian Committee showcased its ambitious plans for 2025 during a recent City Council work session, highlighting significant community engagement and safety initiatives. Chairperson Tony Rich opened the meeting by emphasizing the committee's dedication to preserving Milton's equestrian heritage, which is central to the community's identity.

One of the standout achievements from 2024 was the successful cleanup of Birmingham Park, which saw over 40 volunteers participate in trail inspections and maintenance. Looking ahead, the committee is gearing up for its fourth annual "Meet the Neighbors" event on May 10, expecting to draw even larger crowds than the previous year’s 700 attendees. This year’s event will feature 32 vendors and live music, with improved parking arrangements to address past concerns.

Safety remains a top priority, particularly in light of recent barn fire incidents. The committee has partnered with the local fire department to offer complimentary barn assessments, aiming to educate horse owners on fire prevention. Additionally, they are advocating for the installation of AEDs at equestrian facilities, following a harrowing incident where a rider's life was saved by timely access to such equipment.

The committee also proposed several incentives to support large lot farming, including a manure compost site and reduced variance requirements for structures like barns and chicken coops. These initiatives aim to encourage sustainable farming practices and maintain Milton's rural character.

A notable discussion point was the potential development of an active equestrian park, which could serve as a community hub for equestrian activities. Rich expressed enthusiasm for exploring this idea further, suggesting it could enhance Milton's appeal as a destination for equestrian enthusiasts.
