Burke County Commission approves zoning change to support local business development

Burke County leaders took significant steps towards enhancing local business opportunities and addressing urgent mental health needs for children during their regular meeting on April 21, 2025.

The meeting kicked off with a unanimous vote to rezone a property from residential to general business, a move that aligns with Burke County's strategic land plan. Commissioner Stroud emphasized the importance of this decision, stating it supports local business expansion while ensuring that residential areas are buffered from potential impacts. However, the meeting also highlighted pressing social issues, particularly concerning mental health services for children. Kelly Pearson, a guardian ad litem and adoptive mother of four children with special needs, passionately addressed the board, urging them to prioritize mental health resources. She pointed out the overwhelming demand for services, with families often waiting weeks or months for appointments. Pearson called for immediate access to emergency mental health care, criticizing the current system that leaves children in crisis waiting in hospital hallways.

Amy Kinkade, also from the Guardian ad Litem program, echoed Pearson's concerns, stressing the need for the county to prioritize the welfare of children in custody. She highlighted the dire conditions faced by these children, including instances of them sleeping at the Department of Social Services due to a lack of resources. Kinkade urged the board to focus on child welfare over other projects, emphasizing that the well-being of vulnerable children should be at the forefront of county priorities.
