County implements ADA compliance and multilingual chatbot for website improvements

In a recent work session held at the Orange County government building, officials gathered to discuss critical updates and projects aimed at enhancing community services and accessibility. Among the key topics was the county's commitment to making its website compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This initiative is driven by new regulations that require websites to be accessible to all users, including those with disabilities.

The county plans to ensure that images on the website include alternative text for screen readers, and that videos are accompanied by captions and transcripts. Officials noted the urgency of this project, with a deadline set for April. They also highlighted the challenge posed by PDFs, which often do not work well with screen readers. To address this, the county will convert these documents into web-friendly formats.

In addition to website improvements, the county is introducing a multilingual chatbot. This feature will allow residents to ask questions in various languages, promoting inclusivity and better access to information. This initiative is part of a broader language access plan aimed at serving the diverse community of Orange County.

The meeting also touched on the county's financial management, with plans to implement a new contract management module. This system will enhance tracking of contracts and certificates of insurance, streamlining processes and improving efficiency.

However, not all discussions were focused on new projects. Officials noted that there are no recommended park improvement projects for the upcoming fiscal year. Some projects, including those at Cedar Grove Park, Bingham Park, and Twin Creeks Park, have been postponed beyond the current ten-year planning horizon.

As the meeting concluded, questions arose regarding unspent funds from previous years, particularly concerning conservation easements. With approximately $4 million still available, officials are tasked with determining the best use of these resources moving forward.
