The Hernando School District is set to enhance its educational offerings with the approval of a significant investment in virtual reality (VR) technology. During the recent School Board meeting held on April 22, 2025, board members approved the purchase of VR headsets from Transfer Inc., with an authorization for purchase orders up to an estimated $100,000. This initiative aims to provide students with immersive learning experiences in various vocational programs.

Beth Lascher, the supervisor of college and career programs, presented the proposal, highlighting the potential of VR technology to simulate real-world skills in a safe environment. The headsets will allow students to engage in hands-on training for fields such as automotive, welding, health sciences, and culinary arts before they work with actual tools and equipment. For example, students can practice welding techniques virtually, gaining confidence and skills that will be crucial in their future careers.

The funding for this initiative comes from a grant specifically aimed at integrating technology into the classroom. Lascher noted that while the total authorization is $100,000, the actual expenditure may be less, depending on the availability of headsets and curriculum content. The grant will support a range of programs, including construction, electrical, and manufacturing, ensuring that students across various disciplines benefit from this advanced training method.

In addition to high school students, there are plans to make the VR headsets available for sixth through twelfth graders, with a check-in and check-out system to maximize accessibility. The district is also exploring ways to incorporate VR experiences into lessons for students with exceptional needs, further broadening the impact of this technology.
