Beaufort County 250 Committee seeks funding for American Revolution events

The Beaufort County 2% Accommodations Tax Committee convened on April 8, 2025, to discuss funding initiatives related to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in South Carolina. Rich Thomas, representing the Beaufort County 250 Committee, outlined their mission to educate and engage the public about the significant role of South Carolina, particularly Beaufort County, during the Revolutionary War.

Thomas expressed gratitude for the opportunity to submit a second funding application, highlighting the committee's ongoing efforts to develop a series of initiatives over several years. The current request focuses on the first phase of their plan, which spans from 2025 to 2026, and includes funding for new projects that have emerged since their initial application. Notably, the committee has received a $181,000 grant from the South Carolina 250 Commission, which requires a matching contribution of $53,500.

Among the proposed initiatives are a Veterans Day celebration at Waterfront Park, exhibits on the Battle of Yamacraw Bluff and the Battle of Bloody Point, and a collaboration with the Beaufort County Library System to create patriot exhibits. Additionally, the committee plans to produce educational bookmarks for local schools featuring 15 patriots from the Beaufort District.

The meeting also addressed logistical aspects of event planning, including electronic registration for events and data collection for hotel stays related to these initiatives. Thomas noted that the first major event is scheduled for July 2025, with several activities planned throughout the year.

Looking ahead, Thomas discussed future funding strategies, including applications for additional grants from Hilton Head and Bluffton. He emphasized a significant upcoming project related to the Grays Hill Battlefield, which marks the first victory of the patriots in a land battle during the Revolution. This initiative is set to begin fundraising efforts in 2026, contingent on obtaining necessary approvals from local authorities.

The committee's discussions reflect a commitment to honoring South Carolina's Revolutionary history while fostering community engagement through educational programs and events.
