During the recent Attleboro City Council meeting held on April 22, 2025, the council celebrated Earth Day by discussing the city's recent designation as a Tree City USA, a recognition awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation. This designation highlights Attleboro's commitment to urban forestry and sustainability, marking it as one of only 3,600 communities nationwide and 108 in Massachusetts to achieve this status.
Mike Davis, chair of the Sustainability Commission, presented the significance of this designation, emphasizing the environmental and economic benefits of trees. He noted that trees play a crucial role in carbon capture, stormwater management, and air and water purification. Davis explained that trees not only enhance the aesthetic value of properties but also contribute to increased property values—homes on treed lots are valued approximately 15% higher than those without.

Concerns were raised about recent clear-cutting activities in the area, particularly along Pike Avenue, where new developments have removed significant tree cover. Davis acknowledged these concerns and reiterated the need for sustainable building practices that consider environmental impacts.
In addition to the Tree City USA designation, the council plans to host an Arbor Day celebration, which will further engage the community in tree planting and environmental awareness. This event is scheduled for the following Saturday, although weather conditions may affect the plans.
The meeting underscored the city's ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship, with the Sustainability Commission playing a pivotal role in these initiatives. As Attleboro moves forward, the council aims to balance development with ecological preservation, ensuring that the community remains green and sustainable for future generations.
