Sacramento County announces air quality study revealing toxic metal pollution hotspots

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors convened on April 22, 2025, to address several key agenda items, including public health initiatives and local business support.

The meeting commenced with a presentation on a trial program aimed at mosquito control in the Natomas area. Public health officials discussed the potential use of the incompatible insect technique to suppress mosquito populations and mitigate the risk of diseases such as dengue. Sacramento County will host 11 events aimed at providing resources and support to local entrepreneurs. Representatives from the Small Business Administration and the Women's Business Center joined Geer to express their commitment to fostering small business growth in the region.

The board then moved to consent matters, which included the adoption of an ordinance regulating short-term rentals and the approval of various projects, including the Ansel Hoffman Park Overlay Project. Supervisor Desmond expressed gratitude for improvements to park roadways, which have been a concern for local residents.

A significant discussion arose regarding the Sierra Gateway LLC's default under a development agreement. Staff recommended that the board formally find the company in default due to missed payments, allowing for potential legal remedies.

The meeting also featured a report on the Sacramento vehicle emissions project, which focused on the impact of vehicle pollution on underserved neighborhoods. Public health officials presented findings from air quality monitoring efforts, revealing concerning levels of nitrous oxides and particulate matter in specific areas. The project aimed to engage the community in understanding and addressing air quality issues, with plans for continued monitoring and outreach.

Finally, the board authorized a lease agreement for a new mental health rehabilitation center to be developed by WellSpace Health. This facility is expected to provide critical support for the county's behavioral health needs, particularly for the homeless population.
