Workforce Development Helps Over 20 High Risk Individuals Secure Jobs

The Mayor's Office to Reduce Gun Violence held a budget hearing on April 21, 2025, focusing on workforce development initiatives aimed at engaging high-risk individuals in Syracuse, NY. The meeting highlighted the importance of providing job opportunities as a means to reduce gun violence in the community.

During the discussions, it was noted that over 20 individuals have participated in workforce development programs, which were designed to keep them occupied and away from violence. Although all 50 targeted individuals were contacted, many were hesitant to sign up due to a lack of trust in government entities. Despite this, it was reported that more than half of those contacted engaged in some form of programming or employment.

Key achievements in workforce development included placements at Upstate Medical University and the Carpenters Union, with several individuals also finding work with moving companies. The strategic approach taken by the program aims to transition individuals from street life to stable employment, starting with accessible jobs before moving on to more permanent positions.

The meeting underscored the significance of these initiatives in addressing the needs of high-risk individuals, emphasizing that providing them with constructive activities can lead to a decrease in violent behavior.
