Oakland County expands mental health school navigator program to support students and families

Oakland County's Public Health and Safety Committee has highlighted the success of its Mental Health School Navigators program, which aims to enhance access to behavioral health services for students and families. Launched in August 2021, the initiative was developed in response to the mental health challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and other societal issues, such as school shootings.

The program currently employs four navigators and one mental health referral specialist, funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Since its inception, the navigators have reached 398 out of 458 schools in the county, with a significant increase in referrals from 213 in fiscal year 2023 to 591 in fiscal year 2024. This growth indicates a rising demand for mental health support among students.

However, the program has identified a critical gap in services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Many families struggle to navigate the complexities of transitioning their children from school to adulthood, particularly those who do not have access to Medicaid. The navigators have stepped in to assist these families, providing guidance on guardianship, social security, and other essential services.

Additionally, the program offers co-pay benefits for families with private insurance, helping to alleviate the financial burden of accessing mental health services. This initiative is particularly beneficial for families affected by the Oxford school shooting, as well as those across Oakland County facing similar challenges.

The committee's discussions underscored the importance of continued support for the Mental Health School Navigators program, emphasizing its role in addressing the mental health needs of students and their families. As the program evolves, it aims to further bridge gaps in service and ensure that all students have access to the support they need for a healthy and meaningful life.
