Hamilton County proposes transformative 20% increase in Ohio gaming tax for community funding

Hamilton County is poised for a significant financial boost as discussions surrounding a proposed increase in state gaming revenue gain momentum. During the recent Hamilton County Commissioners Staff Meeting on April 22, 2025, officials highlighted a transformative plan aimed at funding stadiums for 23 professional sports teams across Ohio, which could generate between $180 million to $200 million annually.

The proposal, initiated by Hamilton County, seeks a 20% increase in the gaming tax, a move that has garnered support from Governor Mike DeWine. This increase is designed to ensure that funds are sourced from out-of-state vendors profiting from Ohio's gaming industry, rather than impacting local education or mental health budgets. Currently, the Department of Education receives approximately $150 million from gaming revenue, and the new proposal aims to enhance this without drawing from the general revenue fund.
