City Council approves $329K grant for new firefighting air packs

In a significant move to enhance public safety, the Jamestown City Council has approved the purchase of new self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for the fire department, not to exceed $329,944.22. This decision comes as the current equipment approaches its expiration date, with all existing packs set to be outdated by December 31, 2026.

Fire Chief highlighted the importance of this purchase, noting that the city has relied on Mine Safety Appliances (MSA) for over 40 years. The new SCBAs will ensure that every seated position in the firefighting apparatus is equipped with a brand new air pack, which includes two air cylinders and a face piece tailored to each firefighter's fit. This upgrade is crucial as it aligns with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, which dictate a 15-year lifespan for such equipment.

The grant funding awarded last year facilitated this purchase, allowing the fire department to maintain a high level of readiness and safety for its personnel. With the new equipment, the department anticipates that it will not need to consider replacing these air packs until 2040, significantly extending the life of its firefighting capabilities.
