Canton honors high school wrestling teams for state championship and runner-up achievements

The Canton City Commission meeting on April 21, 2025, celebrated the achievements of local high school wrestling teams, highlighting their recent successes in state competitions.

The meeting began with a recognition of the Canton High School girls wrestling team, which finished as the South Dakota girls team duels runner-up. The team had notable achievements, including one state champion, Finley Evgen, five place winners, and twelve qualifiers among their 43 members from grades 7 through 12. The girls' team has now been state runners-up for four consecutive tournaments. The proclamation acknowledged the contributions of the team members, coaches, and staff, particularly head coach Cameron Gronke and assistant coaches Jeremy, Jason Bartels, and Rachel Mastelier.

Following the girls' recognition, the commission honored the Canton High School boys wrestling team for winning the 2025 state B wrestling championship. This victory marked the team's eighth consecutive championship and their tenth overall state title. The boys' team, led by co-head coaches Jeremy Swenson and Parker Swanson, along with assistant coach Kyle Siebel, has also achieved the remarkable feat of placing at the state tournament for 21 consecutive years.

The meeting concluded with congratulations to both teams for their outstanding performances, emphasizing the community's pride in their accomplishments.
