The Kern Council of Governments held its 2024 Regional Awards of Merit Ceremony on April 24, 2025, recognizing significant contributions to community development in Kern County. A highlight of the event was the award presented to the West Side Recreation and Park District for their pivotal role in reviving the historic Fox Theater in Taft.
Originally built in 1918, the Fox Theater faced closure in 2022 due to financial difficulties. However, the current owner sought assistance from Taft's city manager, Craig Jones, who identified the potential for revitalization. Following discussions with Les Clark III, the executive director of the West Side Recreation and Park District, an agreement was reached to reopen the theater.

To ensure the theater's sustainability, the Recreation and Park District expanded its offerings beyond movie screenings. They began hosting various events, including concerts, comedy shows, and community programs, which attracted significant attendance, such as over 1,000 visitors for the annual trunk or treat event. Additionally, partnerships with private companies and Taft College aim to provide workforce investment programs and internship opportunities for students.
Les Clark III accepted the award on behalf of the West Side Recreation and Park District, expressing gratitude to the many volunteers and community members who supported the theater's revival. He acknowledged the challenges faced by Taft, particularly due to the decline of the local oil industry, but emphasized the importance of community collaboration in overcoming these obstacles. The recognition at the ceremony underscores the vital role of local organizations in preserving cultural landmarks and fostering community spirit in Kern County.
