Town launches new yard waste pickup service starting April 15

Cheektowaga residents can now take advantage of enhanced yard waste collection services, which officially began on April 15, 2025. The Town Board announced that residents are permitted to place out six bags of yard waste, including grass clippings, along with bundled branches and shrubs for collection. The branches must be no longer than three feet and tied with twine to ensure proper handling.

Superintendent Rusnak clarified that the town's grapple trucks will follow garbage collection routes to pick up these yard waste items the day after regular garbage pickup. This initiative not only provides a convenient service for residents but also helps the town save money by allowing for efficient mulching and disposal of the collected waste.

In addition to the yard waste program, the meeting touched on staffing within the highway department, with discussions about upgrading positions for three employees. The supervisor emphasized that these upgrades are budgeted and necessary for maintaining effective operations within the department.

The meeting also included updates on environmental oversight, with a recent visit from representatives of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Environmental Protection Agency to review the Full Brothers Landfill. This routine checkup occurs every five years to ensure compliance and safety standards are being met.
