Encinitas considers expanding Fire Safe Councils to improve wildfire preparedness

The City of Encinitas is ramping up its wildfire preparedness efforts, with discussions at the recent City Council meeting highlighting the need for enhanced vegetation management and the potential expansion of Fire Safe Councils throughout the community. Council members emphasized the importance of proactive measures to mitigate fire risks, particularly in high-risk areas like Lucadia.

During the meeting, officials discussed the current vegetation management program, which is outsourced to fire management services. There is a push to increase the contract with these services to improve the effectiveness of weed abatement efforts. "We just have to increase that contract if we want to get more out of them," one council member noted, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

The conversation also touched on the success of existing Fire Safe Councils, which have proven effective in mobilizing community efforts around fire safety. Council members expressed a desire to see similar councils established in other neighborhoods, encouraging passionate residents to take the lead. In addition to vegetation management, the council discussed the long lead times for acquiring new fire engines, which can take up to five years if customized. However, stock engines are available more quickly, with one recent purchase arriving in just eight months. The city is also exploring federal SAFER grants to help fund personnel costs associated with fire services, although equipment grants remain competitive and challenging to secure.

As part of ongoing training efforts, a wildfire drill is scheduled for next week, involving multiple fire departments to ensure coordinated responses in the event of an emergency. This drill is part of a broader strategy to enhance collaboration among local fire services, ensuring that all departments are prepared to work together effectively.
