UGA Extension highlights youth programs and health initiatives at quarterly report meeting

The Dougherty County Commission convened on April 21, 2025, to discuss various community initiatives and updates from local programs. The meeting began with an invitation to the upcoming ACCG conference, highlighting events sponsored by UGA Extension.

The quarterly report was presented, focusing on several key highlights. The 4-H program showcased a successful Project Achievement competition, where children presented speeches on topics of interest, demonstrating significant growth in participation. High school students prepared extensive presentations, akin to college-level work, which included visual aids such as PowerPoint slides and posters. The program also received a grant of $1,000 to support agricultural education, including the establishment of a hydroponic garden for educational purposes.

Vivek Bist, the Agriculture and Natural Resources agent, reported on a successful meeting for pecan producers, which saw attendance grow from 75 to 100 participants compared to the previous year. He also completed training for 11 new Master Gardeners, expanding the volunteer base dedicated to community gardening efforts.

Rebecca Banville, representing Family and Consumer Sciences, highlighted her collaboration with county human resources to offer health and wellness classes, including cooking demonstrations for county employees. She recently completed ServSafe certification and has begun training local restaurant managers. Vanessa, involved in the EFNET program, is working with various partners to provide health and nutrition education to diverse community groups.

The meeting concluded with a discussion led by Vice Chair Jones, who acknowledged the ongoing contributions of staff members and the importance of their work in the community. The commission recognized the need for continued efforts in 4-H, agriculture, and family services, emphasizing the positive impact these programs have on local families and the community at large.
