Hampton Schools budget proposal adds teachers and esports coaching funding

Hampton City Council has taken significant steps to enhance educational support and resource management during its recent work session on April 23, 2025. The council approved the addition of 56.7 new positions within the Hampton City Schools budget, which includes six coaches for the Academy of Hampton and five non-instructional roles aimed at bolstering various support departments. This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the dual language immersion program at Langley Elementary and improve overall educational outcomes.

The budget, which totals approximately $14.7 million in reductions repurposed from existing funds, reflects a commitment to effective resource management. Key highlights include a $4.1 million allocation for a pharmacy and wellness center, which serves as a vital benefit for employees, and $1.6 million dedicated to the Academies of Hampton, supporting signature experiences for students. The budget also addresses funding for athletics and debt service payments for new educational facilities.

In response to questions from council members, school officials emphasized their proactive approach to managing health premiums without passing costs onto employees, thanks to strategic changes made in previous years. They also acknowledged a decline in student enrollment, which typically affects funding, but noted that increases in at-risk funding have helped mitigate some of the financial impacts.

Looking ahead, the council plans to continue monitoring state budget actions and will reconvene to discuss any necessary adjustments based on final state revenue outcomes.
