Moraga community encouraged to adopt Firewise standards for insurability and safety

The Town of Moraga is taking significant steps to enhance community safety and improve fire insurance options for residents. During the Emergency Preparedness Community Meeting held on April 21, 2025, the Town Council discussed the importance of becoming a Firewise community, particularly in light of the fire hazard severity map that highlights areas at risk.

Residents expressed interest in following the example set by the Campolindo neighborhood, which has actively worked to harden its area against fire threats. The Fire Marshal emphasized that neighborhoods can achieve Firewise designation, which not only provides valuable resources for self-organization and education but also potentially improves insurability. Nancy Watkins, a local actuary, explained that while being part of a Firewise community does not guarantee lower insurance rates, it does help reduce risk, which can lead to better insurance options.
